Un-titled

Oil and graphite on canvas, 14" x 24"

Giving a piece a title, points the viewer in a specific direction...or reinforces the visual information ~ even in representational pieces, like a landscape, or a still life, or a portrait. It narrows down the field of possibilities often fixing the piece in time or location.
A bit like waking up in the morning, with all of the past firmly in place.

A young child is not hampered in this way...there is a sense of wonder, a fresh seeing.

So, giving a piece the title 'Untitled' allows the viewer to explore without constraint. And importantly, the mind is allowed to come to it's own conclusions ~ there is no possibility of being wrong!

Whether or not the piece is liked or not, is no longer the issue.

Love this, the different shades of grey. I can't help myself but I see a church or cathedral or something. The brain always tries to make sense of what one sees.

Funny, before I saw the comments I saw the back of a cathedral as well. I think it points to both the geometry and the subtle sense of holiness in your work. x

truly fascinating and love the idea concept of an "untitled" for viewers' perception amazing what each person can see. My vision clearly depicted a solid structure of a historical building. =) Maybe because thats what I could see in my mind.

Andrew ;> I am not enamored by the naming of paintings so I love the untitled option -- once the piece is done it is the "looker" who reacts.... a conversation has been started I think. I love the movement of this piece--- the combination of subtle and not so subtle prompts to look/move upward .... love that bright green contrast .... the fact that you didn't title this made me look longer and then again rather than just look and say oh I see

@katost I'm always tempted to add some words about a painting ~ i reckon it's my own insecurity that prompts me to write! Thanks Kat :) I wonder, if i was a writer, I'd want to add some pictures!

Andrew ... especially with abstracts I think that the looker's point of view can sometimes even make the painter reevaluate what s/he was getting at post painting ;> I will think on hearing a comment oh yes- I wasn't conscious of that but I can see I was expressing that on a some subconscious level.

I think like many people I too have problems with titles. I often change them over the course of time. But this isn't what interest me about this particular piece. I have looked at it many times and I am struck by the way in which you have achieved to create a space that constantly defies any clear view. I love this moment in art where it feels as if the artist is walking a tightrope between something we can understand, or interpret and something that just drifts in the mind or the heart. There is landscape, depth, architecture and yet, if you try and grasp it, it vanishes. I like that very much.

Andrew this painting appealed to me visually first and then I read your Untitled comments and I love it! Of course it then challenges me cos It does look like something familiar to me and do I want to be so literal? Well, like it or not it makes me think of a church, Alton Barnes in particular shrouded in mists and mystery. Cami says it makes her think of empty containers. Keep on flowing my friend!
