gnosis

Combined process on canvas, 14" x 18"

I like Plato's idea ~ that everything can be represented by number.
If you look at things as vibrational frequency, this makes a lot of sense.

In John King's wonderful book 'The Modern Numerology – A Practical Guide to the meaning and influence of numbers' he lists the attributes of significant numbers.

One that caught my imagination was 1271 —
1271 in the Greek system of numerology, means Stavros (the cross*); E Gnosis, the knowledge of God.
*The cross is a very interesting symbol, of which more later.

This painting hangs in the living room of @lizbeth33 and it couldn't have a nicer home.

Nueve

Oil on canvas, 30" x 40"

The Spanish word 'nueve' means 9
it doesn't mean 'new' at all :)

Actually....just checked ~ the root of 'new', in Spanish is nueve!

Further —

This peculiar etymological relationship between 'new' and 'nine' is found in many languages.

It appears in Persian, Sanskrit and Latin, also....

Neun/Neu (German)

Neuf/nouveau (French) come from the same root ~ in fact neuf and neuve are used to mean 'new')

B = house

Oil and mixed media on canvas, 30" x 40" – 2009

letters of the alphabet...

It was in Phoenicia that the Egyptian hieroglyphic image of 'house' was streamlined, down to a 'letter' which merely sounded the initial sound b of the Semitic word beth, 'house'.

Here is a useful table, from Number Words and Number Symbols by Karl Menninger

The development of alphabetical writing, from the Egyptian (column 1)through the Poenician (2) to the Hebrew (3), Greek (7), Latin (11) and Germanic (12) alphabets. The Greeks gave their letter numerical values(9), and the Hebrews (5) adopted a similar pattern. Column 13 shows the numerical values assigned to the Runic characters.

SODUOK

Oil on canvas, 48" x 60" – 2007

I'm really not very good at Sudoku ~ so here is a mystery of number 9                                                                    (sorry to all you legal typists for the lack of tabbing)

                                                                          1 x 9 = 9
                                            9 x 9 = 81    and    8 + 1 = 9
 9 x 9 x 9 = 729    and    7 + 2 + 9 = 18    and    1 + 8 = 9
                9 x 9 x 9 x 9 = 6561    and    6 + 5 + 6 + 1 = 18    and    1 + 8 = 9

etc...etc...ad infinitum (ie. up to infinity, and no further!)

and of course
N + I + N + E = 9 also

Ha!

un-known

Cement and mixed media on canvas, 30" x 40" – 2009

The prefix 'un' implies a negative or non-existent state
ie un-seen, un-usual, un-expected, un-known.
In order to get from the un-known to the known
it is necessary to pass through zero
                                       ....or is it infinity?

(sometimes, an ugly mark is really useful)

Akashic

Oil and graphite on canvas, 48" x 60" – 2005

Akashic ~ A theosophical term referring to a universal filing system which records every occurring thought, word, and action (past, present and future). The records are impressed on a subtle substance called akasha (or soniferous ether). In Hindu mysticism, this akasha is thought to be the primary principle of nature from which the other four natural principles, fire, air, earth, and water, are created. These five principles also represent the five senses of the human being.

Square of the Moon

Oil on canvas, 30" x 40" – 2008

In numerology, the oldest number patterns occur in the magic square.
The 9-square, known to the ancient Chinese as Lo Shu, was also revered by classical and mediaeval numerologists.

There were seven magic squares, each dedicated to a planet or deity and each associated with particular attributes. The last of the magic squares is the Square of the Moon...
The sum of each line is 369, whose digits are 3 x 1, 3 x 2 and 3 x 3.
The sum of the whole square is 3,321.
The square is centred on 41, the prime number which Ulam discovered reveals the most striking diagonal pattern of primes (Ulam's big doodle).

4 over 3

Oil and water-based paint + graphite on canvas, 18" x 24" – 2008

Ulmus procera...
The disappearance of the Elm tree, from the English landscape, has left an indelible mark on me. I wonder if their magnificence can ever be re-kindled.
Just as the acorn holds the blueprint of an adult oak ~ the elm seed continues to germinate and produce perfect young trees in the hedgerows. But, without fail (so far) the elm beetle snuffs them out long before adulthood.
The elm beetle is not to blame...it's just doing what elm beetles do ~ but I wonder if full elm-ness can be completely restored.

My own view, is that it can ~ not on the gross level of genetic interference,                                                                                                         but at an energetic level.

mem

Cement and mixed media on canvas, 40" x 40" – 2007

When tracing the origin of characters (letters of the alphabet) ~ things can get pretty interesting...
The Hebrew character 'mem', means 'water' ~ it is equivalent to our 'm' and has a numerical (energetic) value of 40.

On the subject of water ~ a word about homeopathy ~

A homeopathic remedy is made, by successively diluting (in water/alcholol) the original substance and shaking it (succussing) between each dilution. This is done until none of the original substance remains, only the energetic or vibrational property of the substance. Scientists have proposed the "memory of water" theory, whereby the structure of the water/alcohol solution is altered by the substance during the process of dilution and retains this structure even after none of the actual substance remains.

During a telephone consultation with my homeopath, she prescribed a remedy that I didn't have in the house. In this instance, the remedy was 'Berlin Wall'. She said to me 'write the words 'Berlin Wall' on a piece of paper and stand a glass of water on it for 5 mins ~ then drink the liquid'.

My own view is that water is like a liquid version of the computer chip ~ liquid crystal if you like, and it can be programmed.
Oh and another thing ~ strange coincidence that water holds the 'mem'-ory. (must drink some more)
