B = house

Oil and mixed media on canvas, 30" x 40" – 2009

letters of the alphabet...

It was in Phoenicia that the Egyptian hieroglyphic image of 'house' was streamlined, down to a 'letter' which merely sounded the initial sound b of the Semitic word beth, 'house'.

Here is a useful table, from Number Words and Number Symbols by Karl Menninger

The development of alphabetical writing, from the Egyptian (column 1)through the Poenician (2) to the Hebrew (3), Greek (7), Latin (11) and Germanic (12) alphabets. The Greeks gave their letter numerical values(9), and the Hebrews (5) adopted a similar pattern. Column 13 shows the numerical values assigned to the Runic characters.

Don't you just hate it, when you forget to buy the batteries!

Fortunately

aitch

Oil on canvas, 22" x 14", 2007

However did that letter...get that name?
Usually there is a logic behind a name ~ in this instance I need help.
Imagine if nothing were named.
Imagine just looking...without allowing the busy mind to apply its labels.
The eyes would be portals...allowing the visual stimuli to just pour through...
No judgement....no separation....

When the mind doesn't interfere, EVERYTHING is new!

How would it be, if no thing had a name ~ not you ~ not me ~ nothing?

exhale

Oil on canvas, 40" x 30" – 2008

When uttering the word 'exhale', it's hard not to exhale at the point of the 'h'

Babies' first breath is always an outbreath....that's why the midwife is always pleased to hear them cry.
