Andrew’s posterous

words...numbers...sometimes, a little cement
« Back to blog

No more things...

Combined process with cement, on canvas. 40" x 30"

This painting is a stranger to me.
When I'd finished it, I had no idea what to call it.
So I took a book off the shelf, opened it and pointed.

This is what I read:

Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem
No more things should be presumed to exist than are absolutely necessary.

                      Attributed to William Occam c.1280-1349

Makes me think of William Carlos Williams' "no ideas but in things". do you know him? Someone once called him "the most painterly of poets."

What a great way to pick a title! Got try it - have been at a total loss for words lately. Like the work, too!

Andrew! This piece spoke to me instantly and first thought said "Silence"...There are no words spoken in silence yet the power behind it *speaks* clearly and loudly. LOVE this! Thank you for sharing!

I have a feeling that you distill a picture to its essence. There are so many "things" in there while you paint so few. Thank you for sharing this!

Your title is one of my favorite philosophical theses. You made me look up Occam's razor again http://bit.ly/z17lo . Old William sure would not have liked Tarot ;)

But we have a heart and a head and sometimes, like in your picture, they meet.

Each day I visit this piece, thinking I will be able to condense my thoughts into a phrase or two. I've decided to stop trying; and simply enjoy.

@Delef_c Perhaps my distillation reflects a poverty of form, but I must say, I like your interpretation better. Thanks so much Detlef.
