Andrew’s posterous

words...numbers...sometimes, a little cement

2 appearing

Oil and water based paint on canvas, 18" x 14"

A sad day....when 2 arrived.
No longer just One.

Separation began.

On a happy note –
This only happened
in the mind.

The idea that a number never ends, is very expansive....
....and that little asterisk is very powerful!

B = house

Oil and mixed media on canvas, 30" x 40" – 2009

letters of the alphabet...

It was in Phoenicia that the Egyptian hieroglyphic image of 'house' was streamlined, down to a 'letter' which merely sounded the initial sound b of the Semitic word beth, 'house'.

Here is a useful table, from Number Words and Number Symbols by Karl Menninger

The development of alphabetical writing, from the Egyptian (column 1)through the Poenician (2) to the Hebrew (3), Greek (7), Latin (11) and Germanic (12) alphabets. The Greeks gave their letter numerical values(9), and the Hebrews (5) adopted a similar pattern. Column 13 shows the numerical values assigned to the Runic characters.

dividing

Oil on canvas, 30" x 24" – 2009

The mind loves to dissect and analyse the past
...there is no future in this.

Our word 'enthusiasm'

meaning 'divinely inspired'.

SODUOK

Oil on canvas, 48" x 60" – 2007

I'm really not very good at Sudoku ~ so here is a mystery of number 9                                                                    (sorry to all you legal typists for the lack of tabbing)

                                                                          1 x 9 = 9
                                            9 x 9 = 81    and    8 + 1 = 9
 9 x 9 x 9 = 729    and    7 + 2 + 9 = 18    and    1 + 8 = 9
                9 x 9 x 9 x 9 = 6561    and    6 + 5 + 6 + 1 = 18    and    1 + 8 = 9

etc...etc...ad infinitum (ie. up to infinity, and no further!)

and of course
N + I + N + E = 9 also

Ha!

un-known

Cement and mixed media on canvas, 30" x 40" – 2009

The prefix 'un' implies a negative or non-existent state
ie un-seen, un-usual, un-expected, un-known.
In order to get from the un-known to the known
it is necessary to pass through zero
                                       ....or is it infinity?

(sometimes, an ugly mark is really useful)
